About Sophia Jenny

New Zealand cyanotype artist.

I’m Sophia Jenny, a New Zealand artist specialising in cyanotype.

Originally trained in cinematography, I spent years working across film, events and as a professional photographer, developing a disciplined sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and composition.

That foundation continues to shape my work. I’ve always been less interested in spectacle than I am in the subtle emotional shift that can occur within a frame.

From late 2017 through to the end of 2020, I was in and out of hospital navigating a significant health crisis. Living with prolonged uncertainty alters your perspective.

Confronting my own mortality clarified what truly matters, and in 2021, I made the conscious decision to commit fully to becoming an artist. It was only after stepping into that commitment that my health began to stabilise and improve.

Cyanotype has offered a way of working that draws on my photographic background while allowing for a tactile approach - photo-sensitive paper coated by hand, exposed to sunlight, and developed in water. It demands precision, patience, and a responsiveness to unpredictable conditions. No two works are ever identical, and that variability remains central to my love of the medium.

I am currently the only artist in New Zealand producing A0 cyanotype contact prints. Working at scale requires both physical engagement and technical precision, and transforms the viewing experience into something highly immersive.

My art explores natural and spiritual beauty as something to be experienced. I’m interested in moments of stillness, peace, and the shift that happens when you pause and feel more grounded than you did a moment before.

I’m also deeply aware of the role art plays within a living environment. Light, scale, and composition all influence how a room feels. My intention is to create work that promotes a sense of tranquility, clarity, and quiet uplift - pieces that settle, and gently shift their atmosphere over time.

I’m based in Auckland and continue to work primarily with natural light, allowing the sun to act as both essential material and artistic collaborator.

My aim is to bring beauty into everyday life, creating work that can be fully experienced - and that offers an anchor of calm within our ever-changing world.

All works are handmade in Auckland, New Zealand.
